When to Blow Out Your Sprinklers in Jackson Hole

An irrigation blowout is the cheapest insurance on your property and the easiest thing to put off. Water left in a line expands when it freezes, and it splits pipe, cracks valve bodies, and breaks backflow assemblies. None of that shows up in October. It shows up when you turn the system on in spring and find a geyser in the lawn.

The window in this valley

Jackson gets hard freezes earlier than most of the country, and the first one does not wait for the calendar. The practical window is roughly late September through October, and the rule is simple: get it done before the first hard freeze, not after. A light frost is fine. A sustained overnight freeze is what does the damage.

If you are booking, earlier in that window is better. Everyone wants the same two weeks, and the last appointments before a cold snap go fast.

What a proper blowout includes

  • Shutting off the supply and relieving pressure at the backflow
  • Blowing each zone separately with enough volume to clear the heads, not just the mains
  • Running every zone more than once, because one pass leaves water behind
  • Draining and protecting the backflow assembly, which is the most expensive part to replace
  • Leaving valves in the correct position for winter

Why the compressor matters more than the price

Blowouts are often quoted cheap because they look quick. The difference between a real blowout and a fast one is air volume. An undersized compressor pushes water down the line instead of out of it, which looks the same on the day and fails the same way in spring. If someone is in and out in ten minutes on a multi zone system, the water is still in there.

What it costs to skip it

A blowout is a small line item. A split main under an established lawn means digging up finished ground, and a cracked backflow assembly is a real repair on its own. The math is not close, which is why we handle blowout in the fall and startup in the spring as one relationship rather than two separate calls.

Call and we will get you on the fall schedule before the freeze.
