How we build for frost
Excavation goes deep enough that the base sits below the reach of ordinary frost movement, and it is dug wider than the patio so the edges are supported instead of crumbling. Base material goes in and gets compacted in lifts, not all at once, because a thick layer compacted in one pass is loose in the middle. Everything is pitched to move water away from the house and out from under the field. Then the pavers go down, edge restraint locks the perimeter, and joint sand gets set. That sequence is the whole job.
What actually drives the price
Homeowners are usually surprised that the pavers themselves are a modest share of the cost. Excavation depth, how much material has to come out and go back in, access for equipment, grade change, and drainage are what move a quote. A flat, open backyard with truck access costs meaningfully less per square foot than a tight side yard on a slope. We will tell you which of those you are dealing with when we walk it, before you are committed to anything.
