What a Paver Patio Actually Costs in Jackson Hole

Almost everyone who calls about a patio asks the price per square foot. It is a fair question and it is the wrong one, because in this valley two patios of identical size can differ by a factor of two. The pavers themselves are a modest share of the cost. What you are really paying for is the excavation, the base, and the drainage underneath, and those change dramatically from one property to the next.

What actually moves the number

  • Excavation depth. Jackson ground freezes deep and moves. A base dug for a mild climate will heave here, so we dig further, which means more material out and more material back in.
  • Access. A flat backyard a skid steer can drive into is a completely different job from a fenced side yard where every wheelbarrow is moved by hand. Access is often the single biggest swing on a quote.
  • Grade change. A level pad is straightforward. A slope needs steps, retaining, or both, and that is structural work with footings.
  • Drainage. Where does water go once the ground is frozen and cannot absorb it? Solving that properly is invisible and not optional.
  • Material. Paver choice matters, but it moves the total far less than people expect.
  • Size and shape. Curves and cut edges take longer than a rectangle, because every edge paver gets cut individually.

Why the cheap bid is usually the expensive one

The fastest way to lower a patio quote is to dig less and compact less. You cannot see either decision on the day the job finishes. You see it in the third spring, when sections have settled, pavers rock underfoot, and water sits on the surface after a storm. At that point the fix is not a repair. It is a teardown and rebuild, and you pay for the patio twice.

This is why we will tell you on the walk-through if the number is going to be higher than you were hoping, and why. You should be able to compare quotes on what is going underneath, not just the square footage and the paver style.

What to ask any contractor before you sign

  • How deep are you excavating, and why that depth for this soil
  • Is the base compacted in lifts, or all at once
  • Where is water going, specifically
  • Is the price fixed, or are there allowances that grow once work starts
  • Who is on site, your crew or a sub

When to book

The season here is short. Most paver work runs from late spring once the ground has fully thawed through early fall. We quote and schedule through the winter, and booking early is usually the difference between getting the window you want and taking what is left. If you are thinking about next summer, the right time to get a number is now.
