Working With a Short Season in Jackson Hole

The single biggest difference between landscaping in Jackson Hole and landscaping almost anywhere else is how little time there is. Between a late thaw and an early freeze, the working season can be a handful of usable weeks. Every decision about what to install and when comes back to that.

What the calendar actually allows

  • Late April into May: thaw, cleanup, and the first work once ground is firm enough to walk without leaving prints
  • June: everything wakes up at once, and this is when the season genuinely starts
  • July and August: peak install window, and the only stretch you can count on
  • September: still workable, but the last honest window for anything that needs to root
  • October: cleanups and irrigation blowout, with hardscape finishing rather than starting
  • November onward: the ground decides, not the schedule

Why timing matters more than it does elsewhere

Sod laid too late never roots and you replace it in spring. A patio started in October risks being half built when the ground freezes, and a partially excavated site over a Jackson winter is a genuine mess. Trees planted with three weeks of season left go into winter without established roots. In a longer climate these are minor timing errors. Here they are the difference between a job that worked and one you pay for again.

How to plan around it

  • Quote in the off season. Winter and early spring are when we walk properties and write scopes, so you are scheduled before the season opens.
  • Book early for the window you want. The good weeks fill first and the ones left in August are what is left.
  • Split the project honestly. Hardscape this season, planting next spring is often the right answer rather than rushing both.
  • Accept a no. If we tell you sod should wait until spring, that is us protecting the result, not turning down work.

The advantage nobody uses

Almost everyone starts calling in May, which means the calendar is set before most people pick up the phone. Getting a quote in winter costs nothing and puts you at the front of a season that has no room in it. If you are thinking about next summer, this fall is the right time to talk.

We will walk the property whenever you are ready, and tell you honestly what fits in the season and what does not.
