What Landscaping Costs in Jackson, WY, and Why

Landscaping in Jackson Hole costs more than the national averages you find online, and it is worth understanding why before you compare quotes. It is not simply that this is an expensive valley. The work itself is genuinely harder here, and the shortcuts that lower a price elsewhere fail faster at this elevation.

What makes this market different

  • A short season. There are far fewer working weeks here, so every crew is compressing a full year of installs into a few months.
  • Deep frost. Bases go deeper, which means more excavation, more material, and more hauling on every hardscape job.
  • Freight. Material has to get here, and that is in every load of base, soil, sod, and stone.
  • Access. Mountain properties, long drives, and tight sites mean more hand work and smaller equipment.
  • Labor. Housing costs in this valley are in every trade rate, landscaping included.

Where the money actually goes

On most installs the visible material is the smaller half of the invoice. Excavation, base, drainage, and grading are where the hours are. That is frustrating when you are comparing quotes on a patio you can picture, but it is also the honest answer to why two bids for the same square footage can be far apart.

Where it is worth spending, and where it is not

  • Worth it: base depth and drainage on anything hard surfaced. This is not visible and it is the whole ballgame.
  • Worth it: irrigation done properly with fall blowout included, because a split main under finished lawn is expensive to reach.
  • Worth it: getting grade and drainage right before anything goes on top of it.
  • Less critical: premium paver styles over standard ones. It changes the look, not the lifespan.
  • Less critical: oversized plantings. Smaller stock establishes better here and catches up within a few seasons.

How to compare quotes fairly

Ask every bidder the same three questions: how deep are you excavating, where is water going, and is the price fixed or are there allowances. If one quote is far lower, those answers will usually tell you exactly why. A number that is lower because someone is digging less is not a better deal, it is a deferred bill.

We give a written scope and a price that holds after walking the property. If the honest number is higher than you were hoping, we will say so on the walk-through rather than at the invoice.
